As the demand for IP cameras and home security becomes more mainstream, you can’t open a computer or technology magazine nowadays without a review of some security device gracing the pages. And unfortunately, with this growing trend comes confusion for customers. So good job that the lovely folks at Computer Shopper are on hand to help out all security-minded customers.
The technology kingpins at Computer Shopper have been on the forefront of this growing trend for a good few years, featuring their first Y-cam review back in 2008. In their last issue, Editor Jim Martin put together a fantastic “How to” guide to setting up an IP camera, helping out all those who have an interest in home security.

Have you ever found yourself wondering “How can I monitor my home?” – If yes? Well, this month’s Computer Shopper magazine has the answers you need – by extending a helpful hand out to one of their concerned readers searching for the perfect solution to protect their home.
Computer Shopper reader Lawrie reached out for advice on home security due to “sky rocketing household insurance premiums” and wanted to install a decent home CCTV security system. With a requirement for 6 cameras monitoring his house and garage, plus the need for wireless connections to appease the aesthetics of his property, he needed some help to wade through the multitude of options. Computer Shopper was happy to help. Here’s what they had to say:
“In terms of IP cameras, we like the Y-cam range for its reliability, if not outright image quality. The Black S model is wireless, has infrared night vision and costs a little over £100. For outdoor use, you can either buy the Bullet camera for around £270, or a £50 Y-cam Shell to make the Black S weather resistant.”
Great advice (not that we’re bias!) and, as suggested in the article, teaming this solution with Synology Surveillance station offers a great, scalable and affordable solution to Lawrie’s problem.
