School security or valuable learning tool?
Posted on Monday, November 8th, 2010
CCTV systems have been a staple installation in schools for years, but the focus has always been very much on security and prevention. While a Y-cam camera can help monitor any part of a school, some future thinking education facilities out there are also making select cameras accessible to anyone, via their websites and social media spaces.

New technology, new learning
The school or class pet. An invaluable learning experience for kids of all ages – giving responsibility, building connections with the school, even a motivational tool. But what happens to the pets when the lights go out and the children go home? With a Y-cam camera, children can keep in touch, and more importantly keep learning, from their homes, from their phones, from their laptops.
One school using cameras to their advantage is Saltash Community School in Cornwall. They provide their pupils with the opportunity to observe their on-site farm 24/7 via live streaming cameras, and their Y-cam takes pride of place overlooking their pig sty. Children are able to continue their learning by observing the animals at home – day and night.
A school fete? Classroom project? A new educational building? This is the sort of thing an IP camera was designed to monitor. Offer remote viewing to parents or governors to keep an eye on a new extension, or for children to watch their classroom projects flourish from home. Even put together a time lapse video condensing months in to seconds.
Columbus School & College in Essex are using their Y-cam to monitor and document their new campus being built; giving pupils, parents and staff the opportunity to stay involved with the development via the live feeds (as well as check up on the activity of the workmen!).
They are even a reason to reach out to your local community through newspapers and media – interactive and learning topics are newsworthy, and can result in excellent PR for establishments (as Saltash School have found out).
For fun or for security, IP cameras are increasingly being used in schools around the world, and even if a school has aging CCTV, the benefits are huge…
Why IP cameras are right for schools
One of the main reasons IP cameras are a great solution for educational facilities such as schools and nurseries is that they are so cost effective. By using an IT infrastructure that is already in place, installation costs and time required can be greatly reduced, plus cameras can be easily added at any time (such as if premises expand). This makes an attractive and sensible choice against traditional analogue CCTV which is difficult to expand or to add extra cameras too.
Y-cam IP cameras are designed to be easy to install and support different types of recording systems. This allows for an easily implemented, complete security solution; one that is future-proof and compatible with other IP camera models. With all Y-cam cameras we provide MultiLive, a free viewing and recording software for multiple cameras in local or remote locations, meaning important cameras can be monitored from the office or from home.
One of the main security issues effecting schools is on-site vandalism, and an IP camera can offer remote monitoring for server rooms, computer rooms, libraries, playgrounds, hallways, and classrooms. Built-in motion detection, email alerts, night-vision options, internal and external models, plus the ability for authorised personnel to view cameras from remote locations using internet enabled devices such as an iPhone, means that staff can see whats happening anywhere, at anytime.
With instant alerts being sent about disturbances, immediate action can be taken and problems remedied – avoiding Monday morning problems or late night calls from caretakers. Cameras also do an excellent job of deterring vandals and reducing possible costs of repair and refurbishment.
