Y-cam Mac OSX Lion-compatible firmware – version 4.23

Posted on Monday, August 15th, 2011

We know that a number of our Mac customers have been anticipating this update after the news that the new Mac OSX Lion discontinued support for our cameras audio stream.  We’ve been working relentlessly to resolve this issue and can now announce the arrival of Firmware 4.23, available to download now.

This new firmware update combats the issues customers were experiencing – audio loss when viewing cameras on the new Mac OS X Lion update, and a problem with enabling NAS-Ready within our new Storage menu on some S Range cameras.

Changes/additions

-      Added AAC-LC audio in RTSP stream. User can select AAC codec in the camera setup page.
-      Added AAC codec support in Storage recording

Bug Fixes

-    Audio fix for Mac OSX Lion
-    Fixed problem with NAS-Ready/Storage functionality

Please note: Due to changes in the firmware structure in this release, camera settings may not be saved during the upgrade.  You are strongly encouraged to backup your cameras settings, and/or make a note of them before upgrading.  This is especially relevant on S Range cameras, as these are most affected by the firmware changes.  If you have not experienced recent firmware issues or Mac incompatibility we would advise you not upgrade your camera at this time, to reduce potential problems with settings being lost.

Upgrading from 4.22? – Cameras will need to be reset back to factory defaults after the firmware upgrade for the updated Storage/NAS-Ready feature to work properly.  We apologise for this, but the changes in the firmware have made upgrading and saving the settings with the changes not possible in this instance.

Mac OS X Lion users – The recent Mac OS X Lion update removed support for AMR audio, so Mac users experienced loss of audio in browser and MultiLive.  This new firmware allows you to set your camera to stream using AAC audio.  This can be done under Camera Setup in Settings.  Please be aware that AAC audio may not be supported by other compatible products, such as NAS/NVR drives,  so there is a trade-off in making Y-cam compatible with OSX Lion.

Update: This update now compatible with our most resent MultiLive for iPhone (updated 31/08/2001). This update can be either downloaded directly from our blog post or via iTunes. If you are upgrading from our past application we ask you to remove the original app and reload this version new. For further information please see our dedicated blog post.

To get your hands on this new firmware free of charge please download directly from our Product Downloads page of our website.  As always, our support team are on hand for advice or to guide you through the upgrade process.

Beware! This update with AAC does not work with the WiFi baby HD app or the Baby Monitor app.  So Mac users are still stuck with either using AMR with no sound on the mac or AAC with squelching sound on the iphone.

Hi Bill, Thanks for this update – We are aware that unfortunately the AAC audio may not be supported by other compatible products which we highlighted within our blog update. Unfortunately we cannot comment on third party compatibility; however we currently making sure that our next update of MultiLive for iPhone is compatible with the new AAC audio stream. Thanks again for your time and we hope to have an update for you soon.

Did the upgrade this AM… now my Lion MAC’s have sound but it is a little cracking.  Sound is better than no sound.  We look forward tot he update Multilive.

Hi, Thanks for the update – I have forwarded your message regarding the sound to our developers to check out, and we’ll keep you posted on the MultiLive. Thanks again

When are you people going to realise that there are now as many mac users as pc users and soon there will be more mac usres than pc users. Quite why any of you software/hardware vendors could not keep up with the many release candidtaes of Lion instead of expressing complete surprise that Apple actually launched it within a few days of the date they were always intending to do is beyond me. You havent updated the Live since the end of last year …… and even that version is somewhat buggy on 10.6 let alone Lion …….. Not very good PR for you I have to say ! ……… and ………… YCAMS (the third part App for your cameras) is a damn sight better than your App …… why ???

Anyone else experiencing loss of external access after a few days with the new firmware. Since updating, I have to re-boot the camera every few days to get internet access to the camera back.

  • http://www.y-cam.com Y-cam Solutions Ltd

Hi Bill, we are sorry for this. We have not heard from any other customers that are experiencing this, but we are keeping our ears our. I have also passed your feedback on to our development team so they to our aware of the issue.
To try and resolve this can I ask if it is your camera loosing connectivity or that it cannot be accessed from the internet? I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully together we can resolve this. Thanks

  • Bill Wilson

Hi, thanks for the reply.  The access to the cam on the network is fine, only drops off on the internet.  This tells me that it is probably a router issue.  This issue only started after the update but perhaps it is just a coincidence.  I will check my router settings.  Other than that, the video and sound on the Iphone is fabulous.  I use the Wifi Baby app and it displays great.

Hi Bill, you are more than welcome and we are thrilled that you are please with the video and sound – Should the drop offs not be a router issue please let us know and we will do our best to resolve that issue for you. Thanks again.

Hello Sibar – I am sorry for your frustration, and we do take your comments serious. We totally understand the importance of supporting the Apple community, and despite our issues we are still one of the few IP camera manufactures that does. We are trying to make sure that all our products are the best that they can be, for both PC and Mac. We are also working on our apps, and have just released a new update for MultiLive for iPhone. We would like to thank you for your feedback and I hope that you will be happier with our future releases. Kind Regards.

  • Kris

I’ve had similar issues in the last few days – no firmware upgrade, but the camera will lock up completely and require a complete reboot.

  • Sibar

Thanks for your reply but it doesn’t really help any of us using Macs – your multi live is SO buggy that I have had to install Parallels and run the win 7 app instead – this is a real pain in the ass ……. and …. its not really the point in stating that you are one of the few to support mac – the fact is that you DO state that you support Mac (it doesn’t say that its buggy and hit and miss) which is why us Mac users have bought your product. You should be more up front about this so that we know. Your iPhone App is STILL not as good (even the latest version) as the Y-CAMS app (have you considered employing him to get your one right ?) – and that should concern you a great deal. What we all want to know is – WHEN we are going to have a bug free fully functioning app for both Mac (Lion compat) AND iPhone ???

Hi Sibar – Thank you again for your reply, we are always happy to hear our customer’s opinions and suggestion, especially when we can improve from them.

I am sorry to hear that our software does not meet your requirements. We do have a number of customers who have been happy with our offering – not that that means we should not strive to improve. We are always developing so please know that we will be aiming to improve all our software over all platforms, and as soon as I know about developments and release I will, as always, make sure our customers know about them.

Regarding the YCAMS app, which is a great application, I do believe that it does not support audio which was a must for us and our customers when releasing this app.

Again I would like to apologise for your disappointment, and should you wish to provide us with your feedback and suggestions please feel free to email us at social (at) y-cam.com where I will be able to pass this on to our development team. Thanks a lot, Victoria.

  • Sibar

You should be a Politician !!!! – Now how about just answering the question please instead of waffling ? I don’t know how any Mac user could be happy ? – your Multi-Live for Mac doesn’t work ! and the iPhone app is dreadful ….. ? You KNOW – it has problems – I have spoken to your support team at least twice on the issue – so just tell us WHEN you are planning on releasing a Multi-Live for Mac that doesn’t keep freezing when you run more than 1 camera on it and WHEN will we have an iPhone App with a good clear picture like YCAMS ??? – It’s not rocket science ?

Sibar, what Mac do you have? I have a Mac Book Pro running Lion and MultiLive works fine for me and my 4 cameras at home, it doesnt crash and I run it all day. The Y-cam iphone app also works fine for me (after I reinstalled it). HAppy to try and help you solve the problem if I can?

    Steve

  • Sibar

Hi Steve (and anyone else) – I have a top of the range MacBook Pro and I have used Ycam since their very 1st cameras. My main use is to monitor cameras over the internet and not internal network. Over internal ip the multi works ok but over the internet the cameras keep stopping every so often resulting in a restart of multi live. Other users are reporting the same issue and have done so for ages now. The Win version works and always has done  (more or less). This is now very old software – they havent updated it for ages which is poor – no difference on Lion or 10.6 (I use both). The picture quality on mac is 50% worse than on PC as well. As far as the iPhone app is concerned – just look for yourself at the difference between the picture quality between the YCAMS app and Y-Cams own app – you would be blind not to notice the difference ! ……… so – I’m not sure what you could do to help unless you could re-write their code for them :( They are not supporting Mac users efficiently unfortunately – and their stupid relies to my posts just re-enforce that point of view. It’s a shame really. I am an IT specialist and Magazine reviewer and so I like to think that after 35 years of using computers I sort of know what I am doing (and talking about) – but hey ……. I’m open to any useful fixes to this issue that clearly Y-Cam don’t have. I’ve asked 3 time when they are planning on updating/releasing some up-to-date software – but as you can all see – the response is ala “David Cameron” – :( – Thanks for taking an interest though. – Sibar.

    Hi Sibar

To answer your question, we currently do not have confirmed release dates for updates to either MultiLive for Mac or MultiLive for iPhone, however both are being worked on continuously by our software teams.

Just to let you know, as far as I am aware, we are the only company to not only offer free Mac multi-viewing camera software, but to also do so completely free of charge. MultiLive for Mac was only released this year, and has already had 3 updates in this time – we are actively improving and working on bugs and fixes. For many customers (as these comments have shown), the software works fine, so I am really sorry on the companies behalf it’s not working properly for you. I know you have been in contact with out tech support, but should wish to speak to them again, please do so, they will do their upmost to help you get these softwares working satisfactorily.

As far as I know, YCAMS is a paid-for app which doesn’t support Y-cam audio streams (the largest feature request of our apps we’ve ever had) and only uses MJPEG pictures (so of course the quality will be different – but bandwidth is immensely different too) – you can set your camera stream settings in your Camera Settings if you want to improve it, however this may affect audio streaming. You are of course free to use this app if you wish (apart from the cost of purchasing it).

I am sorry you feel aggrieved that my replies are “stupid” – I am trying to do my job and I don’t really feel personal attacks are appropriate. Therefore, I would suggest that if you have any further complaints or issues, you email our CEO and founder of Y-cam, Devin Chawda, his personal email is devin [-at-] y-cam.com.
