How To… Connect your Y-cam to your NAS using NAS-Ready™
Posted on Monday, October 10th, 2011
So you’ve got a Y-cam and you want to utilise your cameras awesome NAS-Ready™ functionality. Well, follow our guide below to get over any issues or questions you have during setup.
Earlier this year we released our NAS-Ready™ feature and where most customers are loving the connectivity it provides, we are seeing a few struggle trying to set this feature up. If that sounds familiar to you, then hopefully this step-by-step guide will sort everything out.
Step 1 – Getting the details
There are a few bits and bobs you are going to need to do and know before getting started.
Check that your NAS drive is compatible with the CIFS or SMB protocol – don’t worry, most do, but its good to check and doubly make-sure.
Find out your NAS drive IP address (this can be found within your NAS settings or by using the Search program that came with the drive) and take note of it. It will most likely start 192.X.X.X.
Create a folder in the root of your NAS drive for your Y-cam footage to be saved to. i.e. /footage. The camera only saves to folders one directory deep from the root of the NAS drive, so don’t create a directory like /my-stuff/downloads/camera/footage.
Ideally, create a new user in the NAS drive settings just for your Y-cam to access the drive. When creating the user, give it access to the directory you have just created, and make sure it has Read and Write access to it. If your NAS drive doesn’t allow you to create new users, or you don’t want to, just remember your admin username and password.
Step 2 – Getting your Y-cam talking to your NAS
Next step is to get your Y-cam talking to your NAS. To start this process you will need to access your Y-cam Settings page, and then access the Storage menu (located on the right of the Settings screen) and then Storage Setup.

Step 3 – The settings you need
Now you need to enter your settings within this menu, let’s do it step by step:
a. Storage Select – Select whether you want to record on NAS or microSD card, as your looking to connect to your NAS – select NAS.
b. NAS remote path – This is where you specify the IP address of your NAS drive and also the folder you want the files saved in. Enter your NAS drives IP address (found in Step 1). You should put two forward slashes before the IP address – this is a networking command that gets the Y-cam to access your network. Don’t enter http:// or www in this box, just the two forward slashes and the IP. Follow this IP address with a directory name – the directory already needs to exist on the NAS drive for the Y-cam to save files to it.
Please note : The Y-cam only accepts one level of directory so your address should look like i.e. //192.168.1.100/footage/ as opposed to //192.168.1.100./downloads/camera/footage.
c. Authorisation – Your NAS drive may need a username and password to access it – if this is the case, select Yes, and then enter the details below.
d. User name & Password – This follows on from the point above, and is only required if you selected Yes. You should enter the details here of the Y-cam user you set up on your NAS drive that has Read and Write access.
Please click “Apply” to confirm your settings.
Step 4 – Complete
Your camera and NAS should now be connected; you just need to tell it when you want it to record, either continuously, on alarm (when motion is detected) or at intervals. These options can be also be accessed within your Y-cam settings under the Storage Menu.
