Protection against Distraction Burglaries

Winter is officially here and with the increased risk of becoming a victim of crime, families’ thoughts turn to their most vulnerable members and how best to protect them. In recent months these worries are becoming ever more justified by an increase of distraction burglaries targeting elderly residents. Police have been issuing warnings to the public to remain vigilant, but is this enough, and can relatives do more?
Criminals who carry out distraction burglaries often pray on the most vulnerable, usually the elderly, and especially women. Most victims feel a great amount of uneasiness and lack of trust after distraction break-ins, as the act takes place whilst they are present. One of the worst things about this type of burglary is that owners usually do not detect the burglary until the thieves are miles away.

It is easy to say ‘avoid’ answering the door to strangers, check with the companies they claim to represent and constantly try to remind elderly relatives to follow these procedures, however, in reality this is not always easily implemented and can often be forgotten.
