Beware of Imitations – It has to say Y-cam

Posted on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Well-known brands in industries worldwide have to face the fact that knockoffs, counterfeits and imitations of their products appear increasingly on nefarious websites and popular internet auction sites.

Perhaps we should see it as a compliment that companies feel the need to copy us, but for the sake of our customers, we’re determined to put a stop to it.  Coupled with poor quality construction and lack of safety checks, fake goods are dangerous and can cause electrocution, fire damage or worse, as well as being produced by companies with little or no investment in product development and marketing.

Here at Y-cam we believe you deserve the best possible product and therefore we are constantly improving our products through ongoing development of the camera firmware (such as full Mac compatibility, microSD functionality, and our forthcoming direct to NAS recording), providing free monitoring and recording software, as well as our free suite of smartphone apps. These updates, and much more, are all made available to you free of charge as part of our ongoing customer service agreement.

8 tips when buying a Y-cam IP Camera

  • Don’t be fooled into paying for a poor quality IP camera
  • Look for the Y-cam name on the camera – if it doesn’t say Y-cam, it’s not a Y-cam!
  • Fake Y-cam cameras use low quality components and could be dangerous
  • Only genuine Y-cam camera owners can receive help from Y-cam technical support
  • Future updates to our free MultiLive software and mobile phone apps will only work with genuine Y-cam products
  • Using unauthorised Y-cam resellers can put your order and identity at risk
  • Only genuine Y-cam cameras are covered by the Y-cam warranty
  • If something seems too good to be true, it probably is!

How can I be sure the camera I’m buying is a genuine product?

There is no hard and fast rule – but essentially, if it doesn’t say Y-cam on the box or the camera itself, then it isn’t a Y-cam!  We strongly recommend for you to only purchase our products from authorized Y-cam resellers, which you can find listed on this website in our Where To Buy section.

What is Y-cam doing about this problem?

Y-cam invests significantly to protect its intellectual property rights, and is currently entering in to litigation against several manufacturers over infringements of our copyrights.  Over the last year we have also changed the way our cameras work, ensuring that knockoff products can no longer use our firmware updates and software.

I have purchased an IP camera that I thought was a Y-cam – it’s not Mac Compatible / I cannot view it on my iPhone / the firmware doesn’t work – what can I do?

Return it to your place of purchase immediately, or contact our technical support team to verify its authenticity and how we can help.   We strongly recommend for you to only purchase our products from authorized Y-cam resellers, which you can find listed on this website.

If you have any further questions about Y-cam and our products please contact us, we are here to help.
